Herders handle Trojans

Prather posts 26, Niebur nabs 10 in win

Coming off two grueling games against the top teams in the state a week prior, the Herders’ rebounded with a win against Whitehall on Jan. 26, a 55-32 drubbing of their district foe.

Sydney Prather was a electric again, a 26-point game that’s helped her compete for the district’s most lethal scorer. With 233 points this season, she ranks third behind Three Forks’ Shainy Mack (257) and Kyle Olson (241).

Lauren Niebur went for 10 points, her first double-digit game of the year — also out of a starting role — and capped a pair of 3s in the process.

The recovery after losses — seemingly narrow losses — to both No. 2 Townsend and No. 1 Three Forks on Jan. 19 and 20, respectively, was refreshing for SGHS head coach Kim Finn after the win.

“It was such an emotional and mentally draining two games last weekend,” Finn said. “And we played well. But today, I knew Whitehall was an improved team and they have a good coach; I knew they’d be after Sydney. But if we were patient, moved the ball and played intense defense, we’d come away with the win.”

While she didn’t have the most points scored, senior Madilyn Emter shined in a near-triple-double performance. She recorded nine points with 11 assists and eight steals for the Herders, which was undoubtedly one of the top performances on the court that night.

But even more impressive was her single turnover, something she’d struggled with earlier in the year. Finn said it was the most improved game for the senior this year, as she’s finally settling soundly into her point guard role.

“Every game, they’re figuring out how to move the ball,” Finn said. “We’re just starting to think more and they’re doing the little things. We were all there tonight.”
